Welcome! My name is John E. Payne and my music publishing company is Listen Recordings, The EN’ ProDuctions. Carel, my wife, is my music producer and we are in the process of working on music with meaning.
Our current project is a folk opera consisting of 12 albums, released in three groups of 4 related themes called Quaternities. These albums together form a story from the beginning of creation on to the future. They can be listened to as a group, but they each stand up as a story in themselves. This music is all inclusive and family friendly.

We have just released "Buries The War", part 6 of the 12 part QUATERNITY OUTLINE. Let me give you some idea of how this story is developing.
"Beginning to Beginning (Symmetries)" is the original live to stereo music. It was produced as a limited edition with 6 string & 12 string acoustical guitars with vocals. This original album featured a clock (which is broken), that represents, among other things: time, harmonic balance, energy, mechanism and humanity. The picture of the clock was taken by John with a camera provided by a friend, Jay Vogt, on a rock outcropping near “the road by the river”. This location speaks for nature, spirit, peace and feeling.
"Kindling Rebirth" is composed of local natural musical sounds, live to stereo, recorded on Easter sunrise and sunset of April 19, 1992. The photograph was taken by Carel. It was taken on a beautiful spring evening, showing the natural world at a moment of transition. When John recorded the “birds and chimes” that Easter Sunday, Carel suggested that the album be called Kindling Rebirth. From that idea, the concept of “Quaternities” emerged. Notice the clock’s hands added to the sun.
"Of Butterflies" represents mankind’s awakening, with poetry of the Earthman. The photograph was taken by Jay Vogt. It is of 2 swans with their heads together forming a heart, and a butterfly with the reflection on the water. What a rare moment! When such an excellent photographer captures a fine image like this, the urge to use it is overwhelming. As a symbol of love, natural beauty and transitory reality, this picture drives the story forward. From the experiences of the individual to that of the worldly, our view widens. The butterfly may not be real, but it IS there! And, of course, time is shown to be fleeting.
"Flying Through The Soul" is a musical meditation of rebirth. It is the completion of the Symmetries Quaternity and features the Afterchild poetry along with a unique combination of music, poetry and natural sounds. The drawing is by John and represents a hand reaching for the gift of infinity and serves as a symbol of the quest for spiritual awakening. Humans naturally seek the way and the light.
"Artificial Planet (Interactions)" starts the second quaternity. It is a darker part of the story but is still family friendly. The photograph was taken by John. This sculpture of a planet can be the symbolic representation of a world, a state of mind, a place of mystery and the brink of change. The clock is ticking away even if it is broken!
"Buries The War" is set in the future looking back to the past. We examine the costs of war and start learning how Love can be the answer to our problems. The photograph was taken by Joy Vogt. When Jay showed John this picture of a baby dancing in Army boots, taken by his sister, Joy, he knew the statement implicit in the image would speak to the heart and mind of the listener. The clock is broken but can be fixed. We have now released this album.
"Changing The View" will have cover art that will signify the exploration of the universe, and what the ultimate understanding of symmetries and interactions (the laws of physics and the codes of morality) can mean to us. It will be an image of a human being, back turned toward the viewer, dancing on a cratered, desolate lunar surface. A planet looms in the sky. The naked being celebrates, arms and sight upraised, in a huge rocky footprint. Time dances on.
"Of Stars And Man" will have cover art meant to convey the vastness of space and to signify the importance of the awakening of humanity. This awakening will take many forms, including, but not limited to, spiritual awareness, scientific accomplishment, moral excellence, inclusive love and prosperity. It will be an image showing stars, galaxies and nebulae. The reach will be vast. Stars innumerable fill the field, surrounding enormous spiraling distant island universes. This is our home and we belong to this place. The clock will be represented.
"From The Beyond (Consciousness)" starts the third and final quaternity of this story. The drawing is by John and is an illustration of the eye of the “Traveler” or the Earthman. Reflected in the eye is the image of the “Elder”. The faces in the cave wall, which represent watchfulness and awakening, can also be seen. In the sky, a lone bird flies. By miraculous coincidence, the hands of the clock appear in the cornea’s highlights, the walking stick and the lonesome vegetation.
"Turning Forward" will have artwork representing open-ended hopefulness. The viewer is grounded, able to see the journey from without and within. By using a structure instead of a cave formation, the concepts of culture and society are implied. We are looking from the inside of a simply furnished cabin. The window opening is completely unobstructed, and we see the figure of the “Elder” gazing through the trees towards the sunset. The future will happen, hopefully we can grow into it.
"To Better Days" will have cover art of a toast being given and that a celebration is Immanent (pun intended!). The upraised hands hold glasses with the symbolic representation of the existing and possible worlds. That they have come so far, with heart, hope and hands, to have achieved the journey’s direction, is to have seen the Spirit in existence. The seeker and that which was sought have become One. We will see two hands, one an “Elder” and one a child. The wine glasses in their hands contain water. The “Artificial Planet” floats in one glass with an Earth sphere resting in the other. Fractal patterns in the background signify the gain of knowledge.
"Once Again" cover art will use the symbols of the three Quaternities to include the ideas of “Symmetries”, “Interactions” and “Consciousness”. This self-referential story concludes with an outline of all the major elements used in its telling. The circle of human endeavor examining physics, metaphysics, ethics, politics and epistemology has been linked. The clock ticks on.
